Question
Can my landlord call my Officer In Charge?
I am in the United States Coast Guard. My rent is due on the 5th and i use online billing to pay. I get paid on the first. When i paid my rent this month (OCT 09) i guess i did not hit the finish button and the check was never sent. on the 16th i got a call from my landlords mom telling me i did not pay the rent so i went online and paid it that day. The problem is the 16th is a friday and the bank would not be able to send the check out till the 20th so i told her that. On the 21st i got a call from her again saying that her son had not received the check yet and she did not believe that i sent the check out so i offered to take a screen shot and send it to her via e-mail but she refused to tell me her e-mail address so i said "There is nothing i can do, it was sent out and is in the mail now." Today on the 23rd she decide to call my place of work... a Coast Guard station on our EMERGENCY line to talk to my Officer In Charge about the matter. My question is: Is it legal to call a government facility about a civilian matter? & Is it illegal to call a government emergency phone line for non-emergency purpose?

a. Yes it is legal to call your commander (OIC) about you not paying your rent. b. It is not illegal but not recommended for them to call the emergency line. If they continue to do so, you will be in trouble for creating a situation where they are calling the emergency line. Since you were legally negligent in paying the rent on time, you unfortunately have to suffer the consequences. Explain to your OIC that you sent the rent (have the screen shot with you) and the landlord (or mommy) refused to give you the e-mail address to prove you paid.

In the military 21 years. You gotta pay your civilian obligations or risk a general discharge.

when the mistake was made you should have overnighted a check to her. it was rude of you to still use on line bill pay when it took that long. once you are late you need to do whatever you can to pay fast. if that means pay fed ex an overnight fee then so be it. yes she can your employer. that is common collection tactic

If it was illegal for her to call the government emergency line or the government facility, they would of told her and if neccesary they would of taken action for it. Also, This matter should be between you and your landlord. Not the landlords mother, unless he's a momma's boy and can't handle his rental business. If I was you, I would be contacting your landlord to clear things up and telling his mom that you won't be discussing anything with her since the contract is with her son.
